The Kempinski Hotel & Spa was a complete structural renovation with a new facade, new interiors, and surrounding grounds, to become the first five-star hotel and spa in Dar-e-salam.
Inspired by the dhow, a local Tanzanian boat with beautiful white sails, I designed a large floating rooftop bar, voted Worlds best hotel bar on CNN travel website, where using a glass, curved steel, and concrete structure accentuated the sail-like drama and lifted the sculptural roof up above the hotel and skyline. Lit up at night the rooftop pronounces itself as a beacon around the city. White leather and plaster against wood finishes were chosen as an additional nod to the sailboat and its construction.
I fitted new five star restaurants and spas, alongside conference rooms, hotel rooms, and a plush lobby to welcome visitors from around the world. The design for the interiors was to modernize the hotel with custom furniture and interior architecture using materials, colors, and patterns that are inspired by the local art, fauna, and fashion.
I designed, detailed all interior packages, custom furniture designs and coordinated with the client and construction team on the ground providing design guidance and final finish approvals.
